Packaging Testing Guide
A product can pass every test that applies to it and still arrive broken. Compression from stacked pallets on an ocean voyage, drops in parcel handling, vibration on road routes, and humidity swings between a South China warehouse and a North American one are packaging failures, not product failures, and no amount of product certification addresses them.
Packaging testing is the separate discipline that does. This guide covers the four physical stresses, the three frameworks your buyer is likely to name, what Amazon's programme actually requires, and the limit of what any test report can tell you.
The four stresses, and the standard for each
Whatever framework you end up working to, the underlying methods are the same small set. A test schedule is a way of specifying which of them to run, in what order, and how hard.

Conditioning is not an optional extra. Corrugated board loses compression strength as it takes up moisture, so a compression figure obtained on dry board in a temperate laboratory does not describe the same box after three weeks at sea. Where a schedule calls for conditioning, it is doing the most important part of the job.
The three frameworks, and how to tell which one you need
ASTM D4169, ISO 4180 and ISTA are not competing standards. They are three ways of specifying a schedule that a laboratory will then execute using the methods above. The choice is dictated by who is buying your goods.

If your buyer names a distribution cycle and an assurance level, they are working to ASTM D4169, which AQF covers in detail in its ASTM D4169 distribution cycles guide. If they name a test schedule without naming a cycle, they are usually working to ISO 4180. If they name a procedure number such as 3A, they are working to ISTA.
Getting this right before you commission anything is worth more than it sounds. A laboratory will run what you ask for, and a report against the wrong framework has to be repeated rather than converted.
ISTA, and which series you will be asked for
ISTA procedures are grouped in series, and the series tells you how closely the test tries to reproduce real distribution.

Two of these come up constantly. ISTA 3A is the general simulation procedure for individual packaged products shipped through a parcel system, published for units of 150 lb, given by ISTA as 70 kg, or less. And the 6 series currently carries the Amazon and Sam's Club procedures, the former FedEx procedures having been withdrawn.

Amazon: SIPP, SIOC and APASS
This is the area most often described incorrectly, including by suppliers offering to handle it for you.
What SIPP actually is
SIPP, Ships in Product Packaging, is the umbrella name for Amazon's packaging certification programme. It is not a replacement for Ships in Own Container. SIOC continues to exist inside it, as the second tier, alongside Frustration Free Packaging as the first.
The date frequently quoted, 5 February 2024, is when Amazon activated reduced fulfilment fees for certified packaging. The SIPP name was already in circulation before that in Amazon's vendor documentation.
Certification is carried out by laboratories recognised through Amazon's packaging support and supplier network, and the underlying test procedure is still the ISTA 6 series Amazon procedure.
That procedure is not a single test. It covers eight types, of which the first three address parcel delivery, three more address less than truckload freight, and the last two address televisions and monitors. Which type applies depends on how your goods are shipped and what they weigh, so the type has to be established before a laboratory is engaged.
One framing point worth holding onto. This is a commercial programme, not a legal requirement. Amazon asks for a report, offers fee advantages for certified packaging, and changes its terms through Seller Central, which is not publicly accessible. Treat current requirements as something to verify rather than something to assume, and be wary of any supplier who describes the programme as compulsory. Box compression, and why a formula from 1963 still runs the industry
Compression is where most transit damage originates, because it is cumulative and invisible. A box does not fail at the moment it is loaded. It fails after days under load, in humidity, at the bottom of a stack.
The industry still predicts compression strength using a relationship published by McKee, Gander and Wachuta in Paperboard Packaging in August 1963, linking the strength of a finished box to the properties of the board it is made from and the box dimensions. It is an estimate, not a substitute for testing, and it is why a supplier can quote a board specification and a competent buyer can form a view about whether the resulting box will stack before anything is made.
The practical consequences for a buyer are three. Board specification is a quality parameter, not a purchasing detail. Humidity changes the answer, so the destination and the route matter as much as the board. And a box that stacks in a laboratory can fail in a container if the stacking pattern differs from the assumption used in the test.
What a test report certifies, and what it does not
The report describes the sample, not the shipment
A laboratory certifies that the units it received passed the schedule it was asked to run. It makes no statement about the carton used four months later, on the third production run, from a supplier who may have changed.
The substitutions that undo a passed test are ordinary and rarely announced. A different board grade at the same nominal specification. A single wall construction where the tested sample was double wall. A different closure method. A dunnage insert simplified to save cost. Each of these can be invisible on a packing list and decisive under load.
This is the gap between a test result and a delivered shipment, and it is not closed by testing more. It is closed by verifying that the packaging leaving the factory is the packaging that was tested: board construction, dimensions, closure method and internal protection, checked against the retained sample on the actual production run.
Where there is reason to think the carton is being bought from a different vendor than the one that supplied the test sample, assessing that vendor directly answers the question faster than another test does. How to brief a packaging test
1. Name the framework and the schedule, taken from what your buyer asked for rather than from what a laboratory offers.
2. Establish the shipping mode, since parcel, less than truckload and containerised freight are different schedules and, for the Amazon procedure, different types.
3. State the destination and the route, because conditioning requirements follow the climate the goods will actually see.
4. Fix the sample, meaning the exact board specification, construction, closure and internal protection, and retain a physical reference.
5. Decide how the production run will be checked against that reference, and when.
6. Confirm the laboratory's accreditation covers the specific standard, since accreditation is granted by scope rather than in general.
7. Agree who receives the report, and keep it with the retained sample, because the two are only useful together.

Factory audits are separate from inspection and cover supplier qualification, extended factory assessment and social accountability.
What the report contains
A standard report covers the sampling check against the agreed acceptance levels, quantity, specification, marking, labelling and packing, measurement, and any tests carried out on site. Findings, results and photographs are always included. A section verifying a client's own check points, and photographs of general factory conditions, are added on request.
Reports are typically delivered once the inspection is closed, with formats and turnaround options agreed in advance.

The methods commonly used are ASTM D5276 and ISO 2248. The drop heights and sequence are set by the schedule being run rather than chosen freely.
Why does humidity matter in packaging testing?
Corrugated board takes up moisture and loses compression strength as it does. A box tested on dry board in a temperate laboratory does not behave the same way after a long sea voyage in a humid container.
