The sample size code letters are the intermediate index between the lot size (which is a range) and the actual sample size (which is a number). They run from A, for very small lots and low inspection levels, through R, for very large lots and high inspection levels.

The letter is a function of two inputs: the lot size range (from 2 to 8 units at the bottom of the scale up to 500,001 units and over at the top) and the inspection level (general I, II or III, or special S-1 to S-4). For a given lot size, the code letter rises as the inspection level rises, meaning a larger sample. For a given inspection level, the code letter rises with the lot size, but sublinearly: a 100-fold increase in lot size translates into a much smaller increase in sample size.

A concrete illustration: for a lot of 3,500 units at general inspection level II, Table I gives code letter L. Code letter L at single sampling normal inspection (Table II-A) corresponds to a sample size of 200 units. The four cumulative conditions for Normal to Reduced: the preceding 10 lots have been on Normal Inspection and none has been rejected; the total number of nonconformities on samples from those 10 lots is equal to or less than the applicable limit numbers in Table VIII; production is at a steady rate; and reduced inspection is considered desirable by the responsible authority, typically the buyer.

The four triggers back from Reduced to Normal: a lot is rejected; production becomes irregular or delayed; other conditions warrant reinstating Normal Inspection; or a lot is accepted under Reduced inspection with a number of nonconformities greater than Ac but less than Re (the reduced plan has a gap between Ac and Re, and an intermediate result triggers the return to Normal without rejecting the lot).

The Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL) is the worst quality level that is still considered acceptable as a process average for a continuing stream of lots.
